Lead Level Designer
Reports To
Gameplay Director
Description
Duties
Hire and manage the entire level design team;
Work with the gameplay director to formalize a level design philosophy and methodology;
Maintain the game's established creative direction throughout the length of the project;
Ensure the quality of the game's level design on both a creative and technical level.
Experience and Qualifications
At least 5 years experience as a level designer;
Experience as a lead on a AAA title;
Working knowledge of both French and English, written and spoken or willingness to learn;
Knowledge of (or desire to learn about) psychology as applied to games;
Ability to deal with the pressure of leading 10 or more people;
Ability to work under the direction of somebody else (gameplay director / creative director);
Ability to deal with the pressure of working on a AAA title and a multi-year production cycle.
Technical Skills
Ability to use a level editor;
Knowledge of scripting;
Ability to create and maintain a planning.
Interpersonal Skills
Good sense of responsibility: to be able to own up to one’s mistakes and do what’s needed to repair them;
Leadership: to not only spearhead the creation of content, but also to inspire and motivate the level design team;
Professional: to carefully follow and be up-to-date about the progress of individual level designers;
Punctual: to be on time for milestone deliveries and meetings;
Ability to speak in public in order to lead team meetings;
Ability to work with other departments (programming, animation, art);
Enough maturity to receive and give out constructive criticism.
