Senior Game Designer
Reports To
Lead Game Designer
Description
Duties
Take charge of specific gameplay systems from conception to delivery;
Write and maintain the game design documentation;
Create prototypes in order to validate concepts before implementation;
Present the design to the team once game systems have been conceptualized;
Follow the game systems as they go through the implementation process and provide corrections where necessary;
Balance the systems once they’ve been implemented;
Work with the level designers in the application of the systems within the game;
Act as mentor to junior members of the team.
Experience and Qualifications
At least 5 years experience in the game industry as a game designer;
Working knowledge of both French and English, written and spoken or willingness to learn;
Knowledge of (or desire to learn about) psychology as applied to games;
Flexibility in learning new concepts or game systems;
Ability to deal with more than one issue at a time (multi-tasking);
Ability to work under the direction of someone else (either the lead game designer or the creative director);
Ability to deal with the pressure of working on a AAA title and a multi-year production cycle.
Technical Skills
Ability to use (or learn to use) a level editor;
Knowledge of (or desire to learn about) scripting.
Interpersonal Skills
Good sense of responsibility: to be able to own up to one’s mistakes and do what’s needed to repair them;
Professional: to carefully follow and be up-to-date about one’s areas of responsibilities;
Structured: to write in a way that highlights important information while helping retention on the part of the reader;
Punctual: to be on time for milestone deliveries and meetings;
Ability to speak in public in order to present one’s work;
Ability to work with other departments (programming, animation, art);
Enough maturity to receive and give out constructive criticism.
