Fall Internship: our cohort tells all about their experience

Yasmine Maatallah

Tell us about you! Introduce you in a couple of sentences.

Passionate about communications, I am currently finishing my bachelor’s degree by cumulation at the University of Montréal. I combined a major in communication as well as a minor in video game studies to obtain this baccalaureate and I will integrate the master’s degree in communication in 2022. Outgoing and energetic, I like above all interacting with people. In a nutshell, I would say that I am an open-minded person who is curious about the world around her. I am also passionate about electronic music, film photography and of course video games.

What made you choose Eidos-Montreal?

I have always dreamed of working in communication in the field of video games and Eidos-Montréal is positioned as a leader in the industry. I would add that Eidos-Montréal’s motto of prioritizing the well-being of employees confirmed my choice.

I learned a lot about the world of internal communications to keep employees engaged.

Sofiane Selaoui

Tell us about you! Introduce you in a couple of sentences.

My name is Sofiane. I am passionate about video games and computers. I am completing my second internship at Eidos-Montréal, and I had the pleasure of accepting a position as a Tools programmer at the end of my studies.

What are you studying?

I am studying Computer Science and Software Engineering at UQAM.

What made you choose Eidos-Montréal?

I love single-player games with deep and compelling stories. Eidos-Montreal is therefore one of the studios that I have always appreciated. In addition, what gave me the most satisfaction during my previous work experiences was when I could improve the quality of life of my colleagues by developing work tools for them. The internship I was offered at Eidos-Montréal allowed me to combine that with my passion for video games, so I didn’t hesitate.

What’s the best thing/lesson your learnt during your internship?

I arrived in a team of veterans, very knowledgeable in their respective fields, which can be intimidating at first. I had a lesson in humility. Acknowledging that I knew little and that there is still a lot of work to be done before I am “solid”. My baccalaureate is ending soon, but my learning is only just beginning. I learned to persevere. Each assignment I was given was different from the last and required me to learn new concepts, interact with new people in the studio and understand their reality. Unlike schoolwork, the solutions to the problems I had to solve are not easily found on the Internet. You have to dive deep into the code, understand the architecture and ask questions.

What’s a thing you accomplished during your internship that you’re proud of?

I am proud to have been able to make tools that are really used by artists and analysts and that make their work easier.

Any advice for students who would like to pursue a career in video games?

I think it’s important to be passionate. It is also important to know how to listen and be ready to learn. I was able to work with passionate and competent people, always ready to share their knowledge with me. You have to know how to take advantage of it.

Any advice for students who would like to pursue a career in video games?

The conception of a video game requiring the harmonization of many skills and personalities. It is, in my opinion, important not to think in terms of individual career but rather in terms of collective support. How can your skills and personality help build the cohesion and harmony of the studio to create better games?
